Children learn about Berlin Airlift

A crowd estimated at more than 250 turned out at the Elizabeth City-Pasquotank Regional Airport Saturday for a “candy drop” commemorating the Berlin Airlift at the end of World War II.

As kids waited for the plane to take off and pass overhead — dropping chocolate bars on parachutes — parents and grandparents had their hands full keeping the kids on the white concrete area where they had been instructed to wait. [read full story in the Daily Advance]

Bad weather delays Candy Bomber run

The Candy Bomber drop had to be postponed Saturday due to bad weather and rescheduled for next Saturday at noon at Elizabeth City Regional Airport, according to airport manager Scott Hinton.

“The airplane is going to stay here, but (the crew) is going to go home,” Hinton said. “This works out because they had to come back and pick up the airplane next Saturday to take it to Manteo since they have a (candy) drop there on Sunday.” [read full story in the Daily Advance]

Airport plans First in Flight Festival

November 16, 2009 - The Candy Bomber will be dropping in on Elizabeth City again next month, and this time he’s bringing a whole cargo of aviation-related events with him. But this year, organizers of the candy drop are also planning a number of other events and activities to coincide with Col. Gail Halvorsen’s visit. Elizabeth City’s first-ever First in Flight Festival also will feature free plane rides for children, a remote-controlled plane air show and, thanks to McDonald’s donation of 2,000 hamburgers and other sponsors, free food.
